There are a number of key reasons for building and maintaining this web site:

The following topics are covered by the web site:

Origins of the Stokes clan

This explains where the true roots of the family probably come from, and how they ended up in Edington.

Coat of Arms

Viewable copy of the Stokes coat of arms. The details have been taken from Burke’s General Armoury.

Family Tree

A graphical view of my family tree. Obviously with over 100 people, it’s difficult to make it as readable as possible, so careful mouse clicking is essential to avoid frustration.

Family List

An alphabetical list of all known Stokes members. Links from here will take you to individual members of the Stokes family. This is where the really interested history of the Stokes family is covered.

Edington

Ancient ancestral home village of the Stokes. A small village in Wiltshire boasting several famous claims to fame such as a monastery, site of the famous Alfred the Great defeat of the Danes, and a truly great Church. Site also of the stoning to death of a reigning Bishop! Site also covers Tinhead, a small hamlet which makes up part of Edington.

Bratton

Village next to Edington, and my home village of birth. Edington and Bratton history are too closely linked for it to be ignored. Bratton's main claim to fame is impressive "Westbury" White Horse which sits within it's boundaries.

Wiltshire

County in which Edington is located. Hilly and sparsely populated rural county in South-West England.

Alfred the Great

King of Wessex who won a great victory of the Danes at Edington (called Ethandun in those days). It was make or break for Anglo-Saxon England. Defeat would relegate the Anglo-Saxons to Wales, victory would see a Danish withdrawal and conversion to Christianity.

Stokes of Fame

From the Stokes theory to possible links with Sir Christopher Wren, or even the Monarchy. This section will list the famous Stokes name that has appeared through the ages.

Time Line

Interesting section for the non-genealogists amongst you. This covers what life was like through the ages. For any period it will try and give details on topics such as life expectancy, wages, diseases, disasters, the Monarchy, events, health, population, and many others.
